South Africa produces some world-class Chardonnay and we were privileged to join Karen Glansfield (from KGB Wine) for an #ElginWine Chardonnay tasting recently. The showcased wines were all from the Elgin Valley.

Elgin (located about 1.5hrs drive from Cape Town along the N2 highway) boasts a cooler climate and elevation of around 250 – 450 meters above sea level. This cooler climate allows from some pretty unique wines and slightly different harvesting and wine-making conditions.

Wines tasted on the evening

First flight

Impressions

The Hannay (by Richard Kershaw) is an interesting take on Chardonnay and received acclaim on the evening. Our favourite of this flight was however the Iona Wines Chardonnay 2017. Out of this flight, Lothian Vineyards Chardonnay 2017 also impressed (also a wine by Richard Kershaw).

Second Flight

Impressions

The Richard Kershaw Elgin Clonal Selection Chardonnay 2017 was exceptional. The Paul Wallace Reflection Chardonnay 2017 and Paul Cluver Estate Chardonnay 2017 also impressed.

Third Flight

Impressions

Our favourite of this flight was the Boschendal Elgin Chardonnay 2016. Lizelle Gerber did an incredible job with this wine. We also enjoyed the Elgin Vintners Chardonnay 2016.

Overall

Richard Kershaw Elgin Clonal Selection Chardonnay 2017 took the top honours on the night for us and was a elegantly crafted example of a South African Chardonnay that easily competes on the world stage.
