Long Description

Located at the very eastern edge of the Cape Winelands and along the picturesque Route 62, lies the quaint Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp, where the almost 60 hectares of vineyards tended by the Nels of Boplaas are to be found.

At first glance, this rugged semi-desert region may seem far from hospitable to the cultivation of vines. However, the rich ancient alluvial soils, marked day-night temperature differences and canal system to divert water from the Nels’ and Gamkaskloof dams, the vines, apricot and peach orchards flourish, creating an oasis of sorts.

Apart from cultivating the well-known classic French varieties, Boplaas continues the tradition of tending Muscat vines and is very much focused on the Portuguese varieties – Touriga Naçional, Tinta Barocca, Souzão and Verdelho. The climatic conditions of Caltizdorp are ideal for these hardy Portuguese vines and allow for the crafting of truly unique table wines.

In support of our view that ‘great wine is made in the vineyard’, we’ve ventured since the mid-1990’s beyond the confines of Calitzdorp in search of the finest fruit to produce exceptional wines to showcase the diversity of the Cape. To this end, we use a small portion of fruit from premier vineyards and old vine sites with trusted growers, from as far afield as Darling along the West Coast, the Helderberg around Stellenbosch and high altitude sites of the nearby Outeniqua Mountains.

The Boplaas tasting room is situated on the N2 Garden Route, near Little Brak River, between Mossel Bay and George. This child-friendly facility is situated on a farm, offering cheese platters and Boplaas’ wines to be enjoyed under the trees or on the stoep during the December school holidays.
