Semillon Session

May 12, 2021

Semillon Session

Please join Ex Animo Wine Co for an evening dedicated to Semillon.

“Semillon was once extremely important in South Africa, comprising over 90% of Cape vines in the early nineteenth century… Semillon’s importance declined during the twentieth century and by 2008 only 1,153 ha remained, the equivalent of 2% of the total white vineyard area”
– Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding, José Vouillamoz, Wine Grapes (Penguin, 2012)

Moderated by David Clarke, this 90-minute seminar will feature on the panel:

  • James Downes of SHANNON,
  • Johan Meyer of MOTHER ROCK WINES,
  • John Seccombe of THORNE & DAUGHTERS,
  • Gottfried Mocke of BOEKENHOUTSKLOOF, and
  • Trizanne Barnard of TRIZANNE SIGNATURE WINES.

With the rise and rise of the international reputation of South African Chenin Blanc, along with the excitement of new white varieties to South Africa such as Albarino and Assyrtiko, and the upsurge in interest in incumbent varieties such as Grenache Blanc, Colombard, and Verdelho – is South African Semillon under threat?

Join us as we explore the subject of the recent history, the present, and potential future of this noble variety in South Africa.

An informal tasting of Semillons will follow the seminar.
